Guide on how to do the Nat Veg Lorms Questions

For my Sec 3 classes....

This is your first attempt at LORMS.. The following is a guide for you to complete the questions I gave to you.

LORM
Every exam question, there would be a part that is a LORM type question. It is always 8 marks and appears at the end of the structured questions. It is usually made up to one part.

In LORM type questions, marks alloted based on your ability to reach a higher level of discussion.

Marking Scheme
The marking scheme for this type of question is different from those we been doing in class. No worries, it is actually quite easy to do after a few tries. Below is a generic marking scheme for most LORM questions.

Generic Marking Guide
Level 1 = 0–3marks [Generic description, no reference to examples and one sided view]
Level 2 = 4-6marks [Description of measures, no reference to examples or very little references, one sided view]
Level 3 = 7-8marks [Good description of measures, well supported by examples and statistics, gives a good discussions of weighing pros and cons, good stand[if any]

Hints on how to do the worksheet on Natural Vegetation Lorms....

1. This question has two parts.
a. Describe the problems….
b. Evaluate attempts to solve problems….
You have to choose two problems that are created by deforestation in Indonesia then think of the corresponding solutions that Indonesia took to overcome them. For each of the solution, briefly describe the solution, and then write about their advantages and disadvantages.

2. This question is similar to the hints for qn 1 ‘part b’

3. This one you have to concentrate on Conservation and then another solution. However, you will need to end your discussion by taking a stand on how you feel about conservation as compared to the other solution in its effectiveness.

4. This is similar to question 1 and 2.

5. This question is not on Kalimantan forest but on forests in general so you can quote examples other than those in Kalimantan. Base your answer on the chapter before Kalimantan (uses of forest, the exercise we had on effects of deforestation and on the section of Kalimantan forest on causes of deforestation) You have to write about why trees are cut down for commercial reasons (ie . to earn money) [do about 2] then about why trees should be conserved for economic reasons [ ie. Don’t lose more money] [ie. Economic costs when trees are cut down – flooding will cause agriculture land to be destroyed – money needs to be spent to restore them] [ do about 2]

6. This one is same as question 3 but the focus is on controlled logging.

7. This one is not Kalimantan case study so you can cite other examples from other countries. Like question 5. But you concentrate on ‘finding the main culprit to deforestation’ [which is impossible’ – so you just need to describe other causes of deforestation other than agriculture but can focus on forest fire which clears land at a fast rate in Indonesia for example]

8. This is similar to question 3 and 6.

9. This question you only need to focus on the three solutions given and for each of them, do a brief description followed by the advantages and disadvantages based on examples in Kalimantan.

10. This one same as question 9 but you only need to choose any two solutions and ‘evaluate’ [ie. Describe briefly, then give advantages and disadvantages]

A gentle but firm reminder.....
At all times remember to put in examples/facts/statistics from Kalimantan (or other countries) to support whatever you say.

Thats all folks. If you have problems, no worries okay? Just try. then we will discuss the answer in class to see if you have done it correctly.
